Our inner dialogue plays a powerful role in shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us....
Identify and Overcome Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs are those persistent, negative thoughts that can quietly hold you back from reaching your full potential. Whether it’s in your career or personal life, they often go unnoticed but can have a big impact.
What Are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs can take the form of not feeling capable, deserving, or ready for something, and these feelings can stop us from pursuing our goals and reaching our potential. They’re like mental barriers that keep us stuck in place, preventing us from taking risks or trying new things.
Some common limiting beliefs:
- I’m not good enough.
- I don’t deserve success.
- I’m too old/young to do this.
- I’m not smart enough.
- I’ll fail if I try.
- People won’t like me if I’m successful.
- It’s too late for me to change.
The insidious part of limiting beliefs is that they often feel like the truth, even when they’re not, which is why they can be so powerful and difficult to overcome.
Challenging and Reframing Limiting Beliefs
One way to challenge your limiting beliefs is to ask "are these facts or are they feelings?" You should trust your instincts, but ensure that you are working with facts first. Did your manager actually say that your presentation was disappointing, or were you interpreting a look on their face? Face dialog does not count as fact.
When challenging your limiting belief, it can help to ask yourself these questions:
- What evidence do you have that supports this belief?
- Have you ever succeeded in a situation like this before?
- What would you say to a friend who had this same belief?
- How does holding onto this belief benefit you?
You can then shift your perspective by asking:
- What is an alternative way to view this situation?
- How can you reframe this belief to see it as an opportunity rather than a limitation?
- What positive aspects can you find in the situation that contradict this belief?
- When you think about someone who has already achieved this goal, what would they do in the same situation?
